Book Launch - Research Handbook on Health, AI and the Law

Open-access title explores issues surrounding use of AI in healthcare

Entity:  College of Law
The book explores legal and ethical challenges stemming from AI’s ubiquity in healthcare.

Dr. Barry Solaiman, Associate Dean for Academic Affairs and Assistant Professor of Law at Hamad Bin Khalifa University’s (HBKU) College of Law, co-edited the recently published Research Handbook on Health, AI and the Law - an open-access title that examines the evolving use of AI in healthcare from a legal perspective.

Dr. Solaiman collaborated with Professor I. Glenn Cohen of Harvard Law School to co-edit the book, which explores the uses and legal and ethical challenges of AI in healthcare. The book also covers the legal governance of AI around the world.

To celebrate the launch of the book, the College of Law hosted an event featuring opening remarks from Dean Susan L. Karamanian of the College of Law, and a special panel discussion analyzing several of the book’s insights. Professors Solaiman and Cohen led the conversation, which also included the College of Law’s Dr. Zachary Calo and Dr. Georgios Dimitropoulos; the College of Islamic Studies’ Dr. Mohammed Ghaly; and HBKU Law alumna Abeer Malik who is now an LL.M. student at Harvard Law School. All panelists have contributed important chapters to the book.

Commenting on the book, Dean Karamanian said: “Due to the high quality of the Research Handbook on Health, AI and the Law and its broad societal relevance, HBKU made the important decision to enable anyone in the world to have free access to it. Professors Solaiman and Cohen, along with the other contributors, masterfully examined complex technological developments to provide a comprehensive examination of contemporary issues within the dynamic intersection of AI and healthcare. The book and its public access align with our educational mission to help build legal capacity in Qatar and beyond.”
